Born on Hessle Road to a working-class family, Lel navigated the diverse intersection of Hull’s working-class lesbian drag culture and the politically driven feminist movement, which eventually inspired her to pursue higher education. Alongside friends Melinda and Alison, Lel legally adopted the surname “Meleyal”—a matriarchal amalgam of their first names—to reject patriarchal naming conventions, a legacy that extended to her son and future family members.
