Ross, like others in the archive, began investigating Hull in the early 80s as a photography student under the guidance of Humberside College lecturer and photographer Daniel Meadows. He documented Kandy Lee Barry /Bobby Mandrell performing in The Tower and the Alexandra Hotel.
After leaving Hull and prior to becoming a lecturer at Leeds Arts University Ross was a documentary photographer. He worked on many commissions recording the coal industry, sheep farming, and homelessness and alternative housing… This work he been exhibited widely.
I’m excited to be part of this and for my work to be archived in Hull History Centre and the Bishopgate Archive and for it to be publicly accessible and usable. Projects like this recognising the importance of historical events in locations such as West Hull, and their impact on contemporary culture are important. I’m also glad to revisit these photographs, the contact sheets of which sit in stored away folders
