Marcus along with Andy Roe, Dave Whatt and Paul Weymes was a Silhouette regular. He documented his friends and the scene in side the club. His photos are featured in the 2023 book Silhouette – a queer sort of paradise.
“I’m not a photographer. But I went to Hull Art College in 1981 to study Graphic Design. I’m from Bath originally and moved back there by 1986, so was only in Hull a short while – but such a wonderful time! I’ve spent the last 30 years as a freelance designer (mostly within the music industry).
The images shown here are a photo shoot for an art college project (My tutors were Heiner Jacob, Walter Childs and Jamie Something-or-other. The art college was scattered over three sites and us Graphics lot were based in Anlaby Road) and
mostly they feature the people I lived with in Louis Street – we were known (unbeknownst to us at the time) as ‘The Pretty Boys’. The brief was ‘photograph the locals’. Tutors got a bit shirty with me when I ‘just’ took a load of photos down the local club – thought I’d shown no effort. But I’m so pleased I took them!“
